Kukusan Mountain in Kulon Progo Regency, Yogyakarta Special Region


Located in Kulon Progo Regency, Kukusan Mountain becomes a nice vacation spot to enjoy trekking and sightseeing. This majestic mountain is located in Hargorejo Village and belongs to Kokap Sub-District. In order to reach the viewing post on the top of the mountain, tourists need to walk for about 200 meters from the parking area. Usually, people come to the site early in the morning for enjoying the fresh atmosphere and witnessing the beautiful sunrise. For the information, the mountain has two famous peaks, which are called Kendeng and Dempok Peak!

The Nuance
As mentioned before, Kukusan Mountain has two peaks that tourists can explore during the visit. No wonder, tourists may find two different trekking routes there. The right path heads to Kendeng Peak while the left path leads to Dempok Peak. As for the nuance, it indeed feels refreshing. Plus, the panoramas look wonderful up there. The parking area is located in the nearby tea plantation, actually. Tourists can park the vehicle and conduct trekking to the peaks right away from there. This trekking may take around 15 minutes or less to reach the destination. Also, it features a sandy and plain route.

The most common motive to visit Kukusan Mountain is to enjoy trekking. This explains why most visitors are nature lovers and passionate trekkers. These people come from the nearby villages and outside the region! Each of them has a different preference when choosing the peak to head on, though. Those who look for more splendid panoramas usually choose Kendeng Peak, which is the highest. However, the number of visitors is low there, due to a long and tiring trekking route.

For casual trekkers and common people, they may choose Dempok Peak instead. The spot is merrier due to many visitors and it features nice facilities, especially bamboo benches. Thus, tourists are able to sit and rest while watching beautiful panoramas up there (even though the view is not as great as another peak). During good weather, several mountains can be seen clearly on the horizon! These include Sindoro, Merapi, Sumbing, and Merbabu Mountain!

The next reason for visiting Kukusan Mountain is none other than watching the sunrise. In order to enjoy this view, though, tourists should come early in the morning. After watching the sunrise, it is also recommended to drop by in the nearby tea plantation in order to eat snacks and drinks local beverages! Thanks to the presence of traditional eateries. Therefore, everyone should carry some money when visiting the mountain later.

How to Get There
It is a known fact that an airplane service becomes the best transportation service to reach the Yogyakarta Special Region, especially for those living outside the region. In this case, a flight from Soekarno – Hatta International Airport (Jakarta City) to Adisucipto Airport (Yogyakarta) would take around 1 hour and 10 minutes. After arriving at the airport, tourists should take Yogyakarta – Wates Street and head to Kulon Progo Regency right away. This trip may take around 54 minutes, as the distance is 36.7 km. From Kulon Progo, tourists only need to take Pengasih – Sermo and Sermo Kokap Reach in order to get to the trekking checkpoint. The distance is 13.6 km, so the trip takes about 30 minutes. From that spot, the next thing to do is to walk to one of the peaks.
