Sajau Hot Spring in Bulungan Regency, North Kalimantan Province

What makes tourists come to Bulungan Regency? One of the reasons is the presence of a comfy hot spring located in East Tanjung Palas. The name is Metun Sajau Hot Spring. It was named after the location, after all, which is Metun Sajau Village. As people expect, they may find a natural hot spring in that area. Visitors can enjoy numerous activities like boiling eggs, photography, nature exploration, etc. However, they are not allowed to take a bath in it due to a high density of sulfur. Instead, sightseeing is quite recommended.

The Nuance
Even though Sajau Hot Spring is located in a bare and secluded nature, it has an easy accessibility. The dry and rocky landscape makes the trekking a little bit rough for beginners, though. In this case, tourists must wear comfortable footwear and carry enough bottled water. Once they arrive at the hot spring, the sulfuric steam welcomes them right away. The thing is tourists must not get too near to the hot spring, though. The next recognizable feature is the presence of various sizes of rocks and stones that reside around the site. In the back, some bushes are seen too.

Exploring Sajau Hot Spring
The only challenge is a trekking to reach Sajau Village. Tourists even need to spend hours to get to the village, due to a difficult route. However, after arriving at the village, it is considered easy to get to the hot spring. What tourists need to pay attention is their footwear, as the landscape is considered rocky and dry. Plus, it is recommended to wear a masker when approaching the hot spring. The thick sulfur smoke is annoying, somehow.

As mentioned earlier, tourists are not allowed to get in the hot spring due to the dangerous sulfur. Instead, they can enjoy other activities like photography and sightseeing. Some people even conduct an exploration in order to get better photos and angles. Here is an important consideration. Tourists should reach a higher land in order to get a better view of the hot spring. The rocky surface won’t stop them, no?

Another attractive feature in Sajau Hot Spring is the presence of ironwood trees. Their big size indeed impresses visitors. Not to mention other majestic trees grow in that area, especially Meranti and Bangkirai (which have been there for hundreds of years!). It is recommended to take photos of the trees, too, later.

After arriving at the destination, they must find a local transportation service and head to Bulungan Regency. The distance is 93.1 km, so the trip may take about 2 hours and 9 minutes. As for the best route, it is Ahmad Yani Street. From Bulungan, tourists’ last destination is Sajau Hot Spring at East Tanjung Palas Sub-District. This trip takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes, as the distance is 56.2 km.
