Puttada Ceremony in Majene Regency, West Sulawesi Province

The Nuance
In terms of nuance, Puttada Ceremony is merry and it is attended by lots of people. The most common participants are the locals and elders. Some tourists and outsiders are also seen on the site, though. They usually come to take photos of this rare event! The location is in an outdoor area and it involves lots of processions, too. The good thing is that everyone is allowed to join the ceremony freely. There is no fee and special rules. Everyone only needs to follow all processions without causing disturbances.

Exploring Puttada Ceremony
Puttada Ceremony starts with musical performance. Local musicians would use various traditional instruments like Kecapi, Rebana, Calong, Suling, and much more! One thing, only female musicians are allowed to play those! Also, before playing, there is a special ritual called “Membakar Dupa”. These people simply burn incenses before playing the instruments. For tourists, it would be a unique performance, no? They can also enjoy the beautiful music that they won’t find in other places.

After the musical performance, tourists can enjoy the next procession, which is called Manggere’ Terong. In a nutshell, the locals would sacrifice a buffalo. The size of the buffalo determines the level of the event, actually. The price of this animal is considered quite expensive there. No wonder, Puttada Ceremony is both luxurious and rare. Tourists should not miss the chance to join it, therefore.

What is next? After the sacrifice, the next procession would be Cakkuriri flag rising. In this occasion, tourists should use their cameras to take photos! Once the flag is flown, the real fun begins! Lots of dancers and traditional performers would entertain the audience. These consist of mostly local kids and teenagers! Perhaps this is the merriest one as compared to other phases.

How to Get There
From the capital of Indonesia (Jakarta City), tourists need to visit Mamuju City first by airplane. For the information, a flight from Soekarno – Hatta International Airport to Tampa Padang Airport would take around 4 hours and 45 minutes. For a faster flight, they must only come during good weather, though. Later, once arriving at Mamuju, they can take Poros Majene – Mamuju Street and head to Majene Regency directly. The distance is 85.1 km, so this trip would take about 2 hours and 18 minutes. Lastly, they only need to visit nearby villages where the ceremony is held.
