Wakatobi

Wakatobi is an acronym of four small islands wihich is Wangi-wangi Kaledupa, Tomia and Binongko. This area is located within the territory of Southeast Sulawesi Province which newly separated from Buton district into one district.

Wakatobi National Park has the potential of marine natural resources that having high value and uniqueness, with stunning panoramic underwater. In general, the sea water has a flat configuration from flat landscape until the sloping towards the sea, and some area of the waters have steep bluff. The water depth are varies, the deepest reaches 1044 meters with sandy and rocky surface.

This national park has 25 clusters of coral reefs around the coast of coral islands along the 600 km. More than 112 coral species from 13 families including Acropora formosa, A. hyacinthus, Psammocora profundasafla, Pavona cactus, Leptoseris yabei, Fungia molucensis, Lobophyllia robusta, Merulina ampliata, Platygyra versifora, Euphyllia glabrescens, Tubastraea frondes, Stylophora pistillata, throchelliophorum Sarcophyton, and Sinularia spp.

These islands are genuinely unique, quiet and having fresh atmosphere. There are caves under the ocean. This is the best marine tourism object in Indonesia that worth to be visit by both local or international visitors.

The species that live under these islands are, mollusks, marine worms, sea plants. Sharks, dolphins and whales. Moreover, there are 93 other species of fish which is for consumption and ornamental fish such as Argus spots (Cephalopholus argus), takhasang (naso unicornis), pogo-pogo (Balistoides viridescens), napoleon (Cheilinus undulatus), red fish (Lutjanus biguttatus ), baronang (Siganus guttatus), Amphiprion melanopus, Chaetodon specullum, Chelmon rostratus, Heniochus acuminatus, Lutjanus monostigma, Caesio caerularea, and others.

In addition, there are several sea birds species such as goose-brown stone (Sula leucogaster plotus), kettle melayu (Charadrius peronii), king prawn erasia (Alcedo atthis), also there are three types of turtles that often landed on islands, which is hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata), turtle jars (Caretta caretta), and turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea).

The best visiting season is on April to June and October to December. Although the visitors can do diving at anytime, but in April and December is the best month for diving because the weather is very nice.
