Batam

Batam is the largest city within the Riau Islands. Batam is an island that very strategically located in the international cruise lines. The city has close proximity to Singapore and Malaysia. Batam is one of the fastest growing cities in Indonesia.

Batam is the third most populous city in the Sumatera after Medan and Palembang.

Batam island was first inhabited by Malay people who called themselves as strait people since the year 231 AD. This island was become a field of struggle of Admiral Hang Nadim in fighting the invaders, this island also used by the government in the 1960s as a petroleum logistics base on the island of Sambu.

After the declaration of the Batam free trade zone in 1989 has turned the island upside down, after just a few years of rapid construction it now has a modern airport, tourist and business centers and a still growing infrastructure that has changed the island completely. Batam is actually one of fastest growing tourist destinations in Indonesia in terms of visitor arrivals. There are several tourist resorts here with luxurious hotels and golf courses. Many visitors however choose to use Batam only as an entry point, it is only 40 minutes from Singapore with boat, and then leave with the first available transport to other destinations in Indonesia.

Even Batam is a multi-ethnical island, but it is still based on the Malayan culture and Islam which forms the root of the local culture. Both daily life and the ceremonies have religious and mythical elements, expressed in dance, music and other forms of art. Some of the most popular traditional dances are Jogi Dance, unique for Batam, Zapin Dance, which reflects strong Arabic influence, Persembahan Dance, to welcome honored guests and Ronggeng Dance, where the guests can be invited to come up and join the dance and song.

The official language on the island is Bahasa, but due to the sizeable Chinese population, Chinese languages including Teochew, Hokkien and Mandarin are also spoken in Batam.

Batam has some destinations that ready to be explored by the tourists that passing by to this city. In marine tourism Batam has, Abang archipelago, Nongsa village beach, Marina beach, Pelur beach, Panau beach, Sekilak beach, Dampu island and Mak Dara bay. On historical sites, Batam has Vietnam village, Nong Isa Graveyard and Temenggung Graveyard.
