Padang Mangateh in Padang City, West Sumatra Province


When visiting West Sumatra Province, tourists may find a beautiful vacation spot called Padang Mangateh. The location is near to the border between Lima Puluh Kota Regency and Padang City. To be exact, the location is in Sungai Beringin Village and Payakumbuh Sub-District. In terms of function, this savanna is managed by BPTU-HPT (an animal breeding center) and it has been operating since 1916. According to the locals, the site was inaugurated during the colonial era! Aside from the prime function, these days, the savanna has become a new vacation spot for both locals and tourists. Visitors usually enjoy sightseeing and relaxation up there. They also have the chance to witness lots of cattle directly on the field.

The Nuance
Padang Mangateh is located on a highland, so it features refreshing air and pristine environment. Even the views are wonderful! In terms of size, this savanna has a total area of 280 hectares. The appearance and nuance are similar to that New Zealand’s Hobbiton Village! No wonder, lots of people are astonished by the beauty and want to visit it during holidays later. The size is vast and it features fertile grasses. Some huts and sheds are seen on it, as well. As for the animals, the site is dominated by cows! The locals call them Jawi!

So, what can tourists enjoy in Padang Mangateh? Commonly, people visit the savanna for sightseeing. It is because the location is on the belt of Sago Mountain. No wonder, the grasses grow abundantly in that area. The fertile field indeed becomes a perfect site to take care of and breed cattle. Plus, the panorama looks amazing in that area. It features hilly views and lots of green plants. As long as tourists come during good weather, they would be able to enjoy stunning scenery there.

Next, visitors can watch the breeding activity directly during the visit. Padang Mangateh has two prime functions, actually. First, it is to breed beef cattle and develop supreme fodder. At least, the site has more than 1200 cows! As for the species, the site accommodates Pesisir, Limosin, and Simental cow. Have no worries. Tourists can learn further information regarding these cows by asking either the keepers or local guides later.

The next thing to do is none other than trekking. Everyone should pass through a steep landscape to reach the savanna, after all. One thing, it is not recommended to come too early in the morning. It is because the fog is thick at the time. On the other hand, tourists should come in the afternoon when the sunset appears!

How to Get There
From Jakarta City, tourists can take advantage of an airplane service to reach Padang City. For the information, a flight from Soekarno – Hatta International Airport to Minangkabau Airport would take around 1 hour and 40 minutes. After reaching Padang, the next destination is Sungai Beringin Village at Payakumbuh Sub-District where the savanna is located. The distance is 137 km and the best route to take is Sicincin – Malalak Street. This trip usually takes around 3 hours, actually.
