Breakfast at hotel. We leave for Sugokmo where we start our trekking through the spectacular Baliem Valley. On the way uphill to Kurima and Anjelma we’ll pass the Dani villages with their typical mushroom like huts called honay, with thatched roofs, surrounded by back gardens where coffee plants, bananas, eggplants, caladium and vegetables are grown. The superb view to distant hills and meandering river is awesome. Wild flowers and singing birds add the charms of the countryside. Around 13.30 p.m. we arrive in Anjelma to have lunch. Our porters precede us to prepare our lunch, made from fresh food available along the way, ripe banana and avocado, fresh potatoes directly bought from the farmers. After lunch we may stroll along the village to see the daily life of the Dani people, their villages and their fields. On the nearby there is a small river with very clean and fresh water where you may swim and take a bath. Dinner will be provided by our cooks afterwards. The average altitude in the valley is around 2.000 meters and it gets cold at night. Overnight at the community hall building.

Day 3: From Anjelma to Kilise
Breakfast. At 09.00 a.m. we start our trekking to Kilise. On the way to get there we may see the people work their fields, some harvesting their pineapples, banana and carrots which later become parts of our lunch and dinner. Some people build their houses and it’s interesting to see the way how they build it and the materials used for the building. The view is always spectacular, small waterfalls; small rivers, lofty mountains and the lovely valley feast our eyes. Old people still wear Koteka gourds to cover the male genitals and skirts made of yarns for women. At around 12.00 we reach Kilise for taking a rest and having lunch. Our lodging is Dani house like huts with fresh and clean spring where we may take a bath. After lunch we wander around Kilise to see the traditional houses of the locals. Back to hotel for taking shower, then dinner is served around 19.30 p.m. Overnight at the lodging in Kilise.

Breakfast at the lodging. The locals come to sell their handicrafts to us before our leaving the lodging. Around 09.00 a.m. we start again our walks through the bottom of the valley. In some places we’ll see the red fruits of Pandanus, believed to cure diseases like cancers. We cross the hanging bridge over Baliem River to the other side of the river, observing a long the way people working their fields. Through wooden bridge we cross Mugui River to reach Syokosimo hamlet near Userem village where we’ll stop for lunch. After lunch we may swim in the lovely Tino River with its cool pristine water in the midst of virgin rain forest. In the afternoon we may wander in the village to visit the school, to chat and talk with the locals until dinner time. Overnight at Putra Baliem Homestay run by Pak Alpius and his family.

Day 5: From Userem to Penyoke, Nain, Sugokmo, Jiwika and Wamena
We get up early and have our breakfast. Today we cross the Mugui River again to go to Panyoke where the locals will organize a mock fighting for us. Wild strawberries grow along the roads that slowly ascend until Panyoke. A man steals the wild palm fruit of his neighbor and that provokes war between villages. A peace agreement ensued in which stone burning ritual for cooking pigs and sweet potatoes is organized. It’s interesting to see the Dani people in their best local traditional costume with bird feathers, wild boars fangs and claws as decoration of the body. Fire is made traditionally by rubbing stones in dry grasses. Pikom musical instruments are played. All participants dance happily. Afterwards we continue our trip to Sugokmo through Nain and Seima where we may take a rest near natural spring water considered holy by locals. Lunch is served on the riverside below the shades of tall trees. We cross the Baliem River through a hanging bridge to our trekking starting point. The car brings us back to Baliem Pilamo Hotel to leave our luggage and to take a bath. In the afternoon we go by car to Jiwika to see the mummy (365 years old!) of the Dani chief.
