About Boven Digoel in Papua Province

Papua Province has lots of interesting places to visit, especially during holidays. One of the most recommended regions to explore is called Boven Digoel Regency. The capital is Tanah Merah City and the region is known for history. In terms of name, “Boven” derives from the Dutch Language, which means “above”. The region is considered new, so not many outsiders and tourists recognize it. Despite the fact, visitors would have a nice experience when spending a vacation there. After all, tourists can enjoy several things during the visit. These include learning history, visiting historical sites, photography, and much more!

The Nuance
Boven Digoel doesn’t have sophisticated facilities and accommodations, so tourists should not expect much comfort there. However, the region offers a unique nuance for tourists to enjoy. The accessibility is considered nice, as well. It is neighboring to Mappi and Asmat Regency. What is more? Also, it emits a colonial ambiance due to the presence of reminisces of Dutch architecture!

Exploring Boven Digoel

Not to mention the region is quite secluded and doesn’t have nice roads. Even during rains, most roads become muddy and difficult to use. For a more comfortable exploration, in this case, it is recommended to hire a local guide who can find the right road to take later.

Aside from adventure, tourists often come to Boven Digoel for its history. According to the locals, the region was once used by the Dutch to exile national figures back then. These include M. Hatta, Sayuti Melik, Chalid Salim, and much more! Tourists can simply talk to the locals or guide for further information later. As for tourist site, the most famous one perhaps is the Boven Digoel Camp. This old and abandoned prison indeed offers an interesting history. Aside from that, the building is good enough to be an object for photography.

What is more? Those who visit Boven Digoel can find some nice natural attractions to explore, too. The region even features some beautiful stunning waterfalls. What tourists need is good information regarding the location of these places. Once again, it is recommended to come with a local guide in order to explore the region efficiently later.
