Tarakan Orchid Garden in Tarakan City, North Kalimantan Province


Another unique vacation spot is available in Tarakan City, which is called Kebun Anggrek. “Kebun” means garden while “Anggrek” means orchid. As the name suggests, visitors can see numerous types of orchids in that garden. The construction began in 2004 and it was inaugurated in 2005. This new vacation destination is located in Pantai Amal Village at East Tarakan Sub-District and has an easy accessibility. As for tourist activities, people come to this site to learn different species of orchids and conduct photography. No wonder, most visitors are local families often visit it with their kids. The nuance is good enough to enjoy recreation, after all.

The Nuance
Once arriving at Tarakan Orchid Garden, tourists can see a modest building and several spots for photography. According to the locals, the site stores both cultivated and natural orchids. Tons of them beautify the garden! Not to mention tourists may find hundreds types of flowers and cactus! In terms of size, the building resides on an area of 5 hectares. What about the facilities? Tourists won’t find sophisticated facilities in that area like eateries or gazebos. Thus, it is recommended to carry bottled water and snacks if they want to spend much time there.

Exploring Tarakan Orchid Garden
Most visitors are those who love flowers and nature. They want to see and learn the variety of orchids on the site, after all. For the information, the most common orchid types that tourists may find in that garden are Golden Shower, Catleya, and Dendrobium. Here is the good news. Visitors are able to see the rare species like Anggrek Tebu and Anggrek Hitam (black orchid). Their number is small, though.

According to the keepers, those orchids come from the forest in the downtown. The local government cultivates these beautiful flowers from the seeds, as well. This explains all of them are quite valuable. The popularity even attracts those who live outside North Kalimantan Province. Sometimes, foreigners are also seen on the site, in fact. When it comes to history, even the vice president Boediono once visited the garden back then (in 2011).

During the visit, tourists can also find out information regarding various functions of Tarakan Orchid Garden. It is said the local government also takes advantage of the garden for a conservation area, research center, and education field. As for tourists, they visit the site for photography, learning orchid species, and sightseeing. Moreover, on a special occasion, students come to the garden with their teacher. They conduct a field study in that area!

How to Get There
From Jakarta City, tourists can simply take an airplane at Soekarno – Hatta International Airport and head to Tanjung Harapan Airport at Tanjung Selor City. This flight takes approximately 1 day and 11 jam. Once they arrive at the destination, tourists should head to Kayan Port right away. They can ride a boat to Tengkayu Port (Tarakan Island) afterward. Later, from Kayan Port, they should take Kusuma Bangsa and Gunung Amal Street. The destination is Pantai Amal Village where the orchid garden resides. The distance is 9.1 km, so the distance is 17 minutes.
