Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Vice President Jusuf Kalla has expressed optimism that the tourism industry in Indonesia will fare much better following the recent decrease in world oil prices.

For years it has lived in the shadow of its more famous neighbour Bali.
Now Indonesia’s pristine Lombok Island is making a concerted effort to build itself up as the next Bali, while trying to maintain its natural charm.
Slower to catch the tourism train than its neighbour to the west, Lombok has been promoted as an “unspoiled Bali.”
But a future $600 million development may see it emerge on par with Bali as a world-class tourism destination, according to the United Arab Emirates-based developer. (more…)

PORONG, Indonesia: Mud tourism is about the only thing that is flourishing in Porong, a suburb of Surabaya that two years ago became a disaster zone when hot volcanic mud began spewing from the site of a gas exploration well.
Today, the inland sea of mud is twice the size of Central Park in New York. Enough mud to fill 40 Olympic-sized swimming pools spews out every day and has already displaced 50,000 people and submerged homes, factories and schools. (more…)

Although not from Bali, he is a man who feels a tremendous love of Balinese culture. Drs. Jansen Manansang recently told the Jawa Post that his heart ached following two bombing attacks on Bali in 2002 and 2005. And, while many business people closed their businesses in response to those attacks, he swam against the current investing heavily to open the Bali Safari and Marine Park in the Gianyar district of Bali. JAKARTA, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) — The population of Orangutans in Kalimantan or Borneo Island of Indonesia remained under threat of extinction, despite claims by palm oil firms of applying eco-friendly work practices, according to a newspaper here Saturday.
Deforestation for palm oil plantation was blamed for the killing the protected apes, particularly those living outside conservation areas, said Novi Hardianto, the habitat program manager of the Center for Orangutan Protection (COP). (more…)

Women and girls packed the Badung traditional market on a Saturday morning last month. They were all buying fruits, flowers and other essential ritual materials for the Galungan and Kuningan festivals.
The festivals, which fell on Aug. 20 and 30 respectively, are the most joyous religious celebrations for Bali’s Hindus.
There were so many shoppers the market’s spacious main area could not accommodate them all. (more…)

Residents of the coastal area of Marunda, North Jakarta, are urging the administration to develop Marunda Beach into a high-quality tourism destination to boost the local economy.
One resident, Ami, 30, said Marunda Beach had a lot of potential to become a popular recreational area.
“I’ve been dreaming of enjoying an Ancol-like recreational area in Marunda Beach. Yes, I want it to be developed into something like Ancol, which is cleaner and has more facilities,” Ami told The Jakarta Post on Saturday. (more…)
