Rice: A central part of life in Bali

canggu060505_opt.jpgRice is the Balinese staple. Ask anyone ‘Sudah Makan?’ (already eat?) And they will say, ‘Yes, makan nasi’, which means, yes, rice. Bali and Java have the most well developed sawah (rice terraces) in Indonesia. In Bali as well as Indonesia there are really 2 types of farming, ladang and sawah. Ladang is carried out on arid land or land where the soil is only inches deep.

It is usually used for crops requiring a small amount of rain or cattle. After 1 or 2 crops the soil is exhausted and the farmer must move on to another part of his land. With sawah, the rich volcanic soil, plentiful water and powerful sunlight mean the same land can be farmed without a break, producing huge amounts of rice. In Bali 3 harvests a year are possible on the same land.

The growing and harvesting of rice are governed by adat (traditional law) and the subak (water access governing body) approves and controls the flooding of fields and the diverting of streams. The need for communal cooperation in growing rice is a major factor in Balinese agrarian socialism.

Balinese also believe that Dewi Sri, the Goddess of rice, must be honored and shrines are set up in every sawah to honor her. The Balinese believe that Dewi Sri dwells in every stalk of rice and during harvesting Balinese women use a small curved knife hidden in their palm, cutting only a few stalks with every cut so not to scare Dewi Sri.

Rice means life to the Balinese and is much more than something to fill a belly.

Rice has 3 names: still in the sawah its called padi, in the sack it is beras, on the plate its nasi.

Blue List for Bali

Lonely Planet puts out a book called the Blue List, listing the new ‘hot spots around the world’, that offer the most tantalizing opportunities for adventure. Indonesia features, with good reason, thoguh perhaps Bali has passed the point where one could call it the ‘next hot place’.

If we were to draw up a Blue List for Bali what would be on it? Here’s a start.

Top 5 beaches
: Pasir Putih (Prasi), Biastugal / Pantai Kecil (Padangbai), Dreamland (Bukit), Pura Masuka (Bukit), Balangan (Bukit).

Top 5 restaurants: Warisan, Ultimo, Kori Restaurant, KuDeTa, Living Room

Top 5 nightspots: Double Six, MBarGo, DeJaVu, Paddy’s, Santa Fe

Top 5 overnight trips: Ubud, Balian, Candi Dasa, Cliff top on Bukit, Amed

What other categories are there and what are your choices?

Eco-tourism and Bali

Eco tourism, or ecological tourism, as Wikipedia defines it, is a growing phenomenon around the world. The idea behind it, is to leave either minimal impact, or a positive impact on the local environment / culture. That sounds great, and identifies that fact that some people are actually thinking about the impact of tourism. A BBC article discusses some of the benefits of eco tourism, and asks whether its what it’s cracked up to be.

The central issue to the debate around eco tourism, is a refined version of the same debate around tourism in general, ‘is tourism good for the local people, land, culture, economy?’ Depending on who you talk to, whether it be Tony Wheeler, the head of Four Seasons, a spokesman for Greenpeace, or a local tribal person, you’ll get varying views, on the effects.

Bringing the subject of eco-tourism to Bali, one has to wonder what is the ideal, we are chasing. Do we let the locals (who have a perfect right to live as they see fit) continue to destroy Bali, with pesticide, burning of plastics, trashing rivers, roads, beaches, with garbage? Do we gently try to establish some rules of engagement and programs, eg. curb side recycling, car emissions standards, fines for littering. Or do we go for a ‘US National Park’ approach, enforcing strict regulations on the most scenic areas, charging for entry, and limiting the activitities inside that area?

The National park system in the US is wonderful, but it is restricting. Some organisations such as JED are trying to encourage Balinese locals to act in a more eco-consious way, realising tourism can pay the bills. The downside to this, is that a village area / rice fields, will have a ‘turnstyle’ so to speak, and remember, Bali is not that big. In 20 years, will Bali be a Sunshine Coast of villas, an over-used garbage dump, or a eco theme park, complete with Barong dances at dinner time?

In my opinion the goal of future development should be focused on 3 things: Preserving the natural aspects of the island of Bali, preserving the Balinese culture, by encouraging cultural events and developing an economic environment, with increased education, that creates realistic and desirable jobs for Balinese people.

There are reasons why people burn plastic, dump garbage and pull stunts, when it comes to money. Eco tourism takes into consideration my 3 main points, so for me its positive.

Fresh: Japanese restaurant in Seminyak Bali

freshFriday night in Bali was a busy little time-frame, with a new Kafe Warisan furniture place opening in Jimbaran, a showing at the Jenggala Gallery in Jimbaran, and the soft-opening of Fresh, a new Japanese restaurant in Seminyak. My schedule was going to be tight, with an invite to Fresh starting at 8pm and another invite to Jenggala at 7.30rp. Fresh is located on Jl. Oberoi, past Rumours and Trattoria, hang a left around the bend and its there on your right.

freshWhen I showed up the staff were still getting ready to serve food and drinks, to the invited guests. Taking the opportunity to snap a couple of photos, I moved around using the small bendy tripod. As you can see, there is a central bar area, low chairs and tables, and an outside area with tables and chairs. The owner Michael from England told me, there is usually a cooling breeze in the evenings. The space is open, relaxing and stylish. Dropping in for a sushi tray, or even a bowl of miso soup would be wonderful at any time. The menu is simple, all Japanese, and states the actual price you will pay, without the plus, plus etc. you get hit with at most restaurants. If sushi is not your thing, you might enjoy Oyako Don, which is steamed rice, with a layer of onions, chicken and egg, together with mushroom. Fresh serves this for just 40,000rp and its is one of my favourites. Michael told me Fresh is starting out serving dinner, but will do lunch and also breakfast in 2007.

Here’s a look at the menu.

Mini Delights - including Nutas Shake / Maguro (19,000rp)

Sashimi & Sushi including - Tai (snapper) (22,000rp-15,000rp), Mekajiki (swordfish) (22,000rp-18,000rp), Ebi (prawn) (28,000rp-30,000rp).

Cone It / Roll It - featuring:-
Meat Lovers - including Beef with Foie Gras Roll (140,000rp-110,000rp).
Vegetarian - including Funky Fungus (22,000rp)
Fish Lovers - including Tuna Pedas (35,000rp)
Combo (comes with miso soup, ahi-po, green tea & ice cream) - including Fresh La La (Yellowtail Tuna, Salmon, Octopus, Snapper, Scallop, Fish Roe Sushi, 1/2 Balinese Roll) (103,000rp)

Signature (6 bitefuls of maki you can’t find anywhere else)
including - Ms Labalaba (Softshell Crab Tempura, with avocado, topped with eel (105,000rp)

Hot Delights - including Katsu / Oyako Don (40,000rp)

Dessert - including tempura ice cream (26,000rp)

Thirst Quenchers including
Sake & Wine including Kubota (140,000rp a carafe)
Cocktails - including Berry Lychee Caipiroska (45,000rp)
Martini’s - including Casino Royale (45,000rp)

Prices are net. Meaning the 10% tax and 5% Service are already included.

Bali Forum Threads for the week of December 11, 2006

Check out these topics currently being discussed on the Bali Forum at BootsnAll:

  • Anyone done a liveaboard? Phoenix Firelight wants to know about chartering a dive boat for about a week. Nick and PeterCatchpole offer some suggestions.

!–more–>

  • A newbie to the Bali Forum is hoping to plan her winter/spring vacation from her teaching position in South Korea, and is looking seriously at Bali. She’s wondering if Bali can offer her what she wants for her holiday - and Nick says it can.
  • Bev is in Australia and was thinking of hopping a one-way flight to Bali… But she’s not sure if she’ll need proof of an ongoing ticket or if she’ll have trouble getting through customs. From the responses so far, it seems like she could run into some problems.
  • With a month in Bali, what would you say should not be missed? Rainbowserenity will be in Bali next year for her honeymoon, and wants to make sure she hits all the highlights. Nick’s list is great - but did he leave off any of your favorite spots?Chime in with your input! And if you’re not already a member, sign-up here - it’s free!

Afternoon shower in Seminyak Bali

Sitting at Ocha’s warung, on Jl. Seminyak, eating nasi campur this afternoon, I chatted with a world traveller about India and Nepal. Having hiked the Annapurna Circuit in 1995, I remembered some of the places on the trek. Towards the end of our conversation, I could feel the humidity rising and looking outside saw the wind pick up.

its going to rain! Hurrying the first few drops of rain bounced off of my Aussie hat, quickly turning into a downpour. Not expecting the rain to last for long, but immediately feeling the calming effects, I got the kettle on and made a Tequila coffee, just the thing to get the creative juices flowing. Only wish I had some ginger handy, as ginger coffee (black coffee, a bit of sugar and ginger), is a great ‘pick me up’, I find.

Latest news at my house is a new neighbor moved in. Haven’t me her yet, but I know she is from the UK. There’s an old saying ‘the squeeky wheel gets the grease’. It means the one who speaks up first, gets the attention. On Sunday night I cranked up ther volume on the Italian soccer game (we get it live), and the last 2 nights they have been showing old James Bond films, (plenty of 70’s style soundtrack and shooting). Now she knows I like to make noise, so no worries. Actually I’m quiet, but I don’t want ‘Jackie come lately’ telling me to ‘pipe down’. Who knows, maybe she’s cool.

While typing, I just saw a 2ft long lizard walk across my garden. It paused for a moment, then dissappeared down a hole, next to the large papaya tree that fell over last week. So far the lizard hasn’t bothered me, so he can stay in his hole. Just one of the aspects of living in Bali.

New motorbike in Bali

For a while now I have been thinking about buying a motorbike. Actually I have been thinking about it for 3 years, but couldn’t quite commit on anything I liked. In order for me to own a car or motorbike, I need KITAS, but I can put it in Ika’s name. Motorbike rental is easy and cheap in Bali. I pay 400,000rp per month to rent a new Honda Supra Fit 100CC (Trendy performance with hip-up model). That’s 13,333rp per day, which is not much at all.

The scooter type bike is handy for getting aorund in the Kuta area, which is what I do most of the time. Its not so good for handling bumpy roads or hills. Honda makes a selection of scooters, including the Fuel Injection 125CC (the sky becoming bluer), which has plenty of zip. They also make the Tiger (hefty & sporty design), which is a proper motorbike, with good suspension and better climbing power. I should really go for one of these, because it fit my size better than a scooter and will probably last longer.

Indonesia has banned the sale of 2-stroke bikes, which is a good thing and means the ends of the Suzuki 125 trail bike. Many expats in Seminyak ride exotic road and trail bikes and the other day a guy told me he imported his from Belgium. The advantage in buying a local bike is price and maintenance. You can get a financing package over here also, but if you can afford to buy it outright, why not? The 4 main brands of bikes available new here are Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha and Kawasaki. Everyone has their favourite, but I reckon Honda has the edge.

When riding a motorbike in Bali you don’t have the worry of speed cops, or being over the alcohol limit, nobody cares. The thing is, you basically have to wipe your own ass, and if you have an accident, its you who will have to figure out a solution, as far as medical and fixing up your bike.

Sanur entertainment

Sanur is not famous for its nighttime entertainment, but there are a few things going on. The Cat & Fiddle Pub on Jl. Camara #36, has Irish folk music night every Tuesday, anyone is welcome to get up and join in. Starts at 8pm. Admission free.

Many hotels in Sanur feature traditional Balinese dancing. This will be advetised at each hotel and is usually a once a week event. Restaurants along the main street, Jl. Danau Tamblingan also offer Balinese dancing on occassion, advertising it on a board outside. The Grand Bali Beach Hotel has a ‘cultural evening’ with buffet dinner and Balinese dancing (Mon, Wed, Fri at 7pm. Other places where you might see Balinese dancing include Bali Wirasana Hotel, Swastika Garden 2, Lotus Pond.

Arena Sports Bar is a fun place to catch a soccer match or a game of Aussie Rules. Located at Jl. ByPass I Gusti Ngurah Rai 115, it is easy to get to, for people staying along Jl. Danau Tamblingan. If Sanur isn’t lively enough for you, jump into a cab and head to Kuta (nightclubs located on lower Jl. Legian) or to Seminyak (bars & nightclubs located at the end of Jl. Double Six and on Jl. Dhyana Pura).

StreetLife in Seminyak Bali

ninaA year ago I stopped into StreetLife, a bar on Jl. Oberoi, and chatted with owner Luca, from Belgium. This afternoon I went back to see how he’s doing. Luca is a man of action, and is currently splitting his time between Bali and Shanghai, a place he refers to as, the ‘new New York’. StreetLife is located about 50 meters before Rumours restaurant, and is a popular place with the real estate crowd. Also Luca told me, many restaurant chefs come along for a drink after work, as it is ideally situated.

Today Nina from Surabaya, was tending bar and eagerly asked questions, about where I live, what I do etc. She told me its hardly ever busy anymore, and the 2005 bomb really hammered things. Luca told me that people in Asia, often don’t realize Bali is Hindu, and are amazed he lives here. He suggested Bali step up its marketing campaign to point out, this is not a Muslim island, a barrier for some tourists.

Prices include:
Mixed drinks 40,000-45,000rp
Small Heineken 15,000rp
Large Heineken 25,000rp
Small Bintang 12,000rp
Large Bintang 20,000rp
Corona 25,000rp
Duvel 45,000rp

StreetLife is open from 4pm - 2am daily.
