Forest fires surge on Indonesia’s Borneo
Indonesian officials say the number of land-clearing fires on the island of Borneo has soared in recent days, raising concerns the resulting haze could pollute skies over neighbouring Malaysia and Singapore.
More than 400 fires are now being monitored on Borneo, compared to around 200 on Wednesday and 100 earlier this week.
The Forestry Ministry says most of the fires are in West Kalimantan, the majority of which have been set by local farmers, and the rest on commercial plantations.
Indonesian news agency Antara says air quality is down in the state capital Pontianak, despite government promises to control the annual burn-off.
