Lake Kastoba
Bawean means “sunlight exists” in Sanskrit, which is what fourteenth century shipwrecked sailors reportedly exclaimed upon seeing it under clear skies after days tossed about in stormy seas. At three in the morning, my first sight of Bawean–a roller coaster silhouette on a bobbing horizon–made its less romantic name of Big Mountain Island more meaningful, a reference to the ninety-nine hills that occupy its 200-kilometer length. On the summit of one, I imagined the animist King Babileono to have sat in power-rejuvenating meditation.

Located in the village of Paromaan, sub-district of Tambak in Bawean Isle. The lake is 30 Ha wide and it is 300 m above sea level. It is 5 km away from the capital of the sub-district of which the rest 3 km is a path.

• Noko Isle
Noko isle is a sea garden closed to the isle of Bawean. Located in the village of Daun, sub-district of Sangkapura, Noko is 10 km away from the capital of the city. It is reached by motor boat.

BAWEAN DEER, KUHL’S DEER

The Bawean deer was described by Müller in 1840. This deer inhabits the tiny island of Bawean (”buh-WEE-an”) in Indonesia, found in the Java sea between the islands of Borneo and Java, giving it the most restricted range of any deer species. This diminutive member of the deer family is also extremely shy - so much so that very few Bawean natives have ever seen one.

Axis (Latin) is said to be Pliny’s name for the chital, though some records show it as “an unknown wild animal in India.” Dr. H. Kuhl (1796-1821) was a German naturalist who was in the East Indies in 1820 and 1821.

• The Lawa Cave
Located in the village of Pongangan, sub-district of Manyar. The road to the cave (500 m) is not asphalted yet.
