MAHESA LAWUNG


Mahesa Lawung is a ceremony aimed to beseech to God Almighty for blessing and prosperity of Surakarta Palace and the local people. The tradition also aimed to harmonize nature and destiny of human has been there since Syailendra and Snajaya Dynasty. It based on the existence of Durga Mahesa Suramandini statue. The procession then continued to run it down for generation without interruption until now.

 

Mahesa Lawung is annual event on the 40-days after the Maulud Festival. The result show of Lawung is buried a piece of buffalo heads and feet, complete with offal in Krendowahono Forest. The forest was chosen as the venue for the ceremony because it was believed the throne of the Goddess Batari Kalayuwati be protective magic of Solo Palace on the north side.
