The first famous traditional dance of Belu Regency is called Likurai. In a nutshell, it is a war dance. The locals perform it either during welcoming or sending off warriors to the war field. In the past, these warriors even carried the heads of their enemies as the symbol of victory! At the time, Feto or beautiful local ladies performed the dance to entertain and honor those warriors. In terms of name, it derives from the Tetun Language. The meaning is to conquer the earth! “Likui” means to conquer while “Rai” means the earth.

Another famous dance of Belu Regency is called Tebe. The whole meaning of this dance is related to the expression of happiness due to any type of achievement. The dancers consist of both men and women who dance side by side and form a circular formation. During the performance, they even sing along and chant poetry! Not to mention they stomp on the ground in accordance with the accompaniment. The good thing is the audience is allowed to participate in the dance!

For the audience, it is better to know several rules before watching the dances. For instance, it is related to the behavior. No one is allowed to make too much noise while watching the dance, indeed. For those who want to take pictures, it is better to turn off the flash feature.
