Karangpayung Beach in Wonogiri Regency, Central Java Province


In Wonogiri Regency, Nampu and Kali Mirah indeed become the prime beaches for tourists to visit during holidays. The fact is the region also has other beautiful beaches including Karangpayung. This one is located in Gunturharjo Village and belongs to Paranggupito Sub-District, actually. The good thing is the beach resides near to Waru Beach, which is a half kilometer apart and located in the west of it. It is because tourists need to walk from Waru Beach and pass through a rocky landscape between a tall cliff and lush trees.

Despite the difficulty, visitors won’t regret in visiting Karangpayung Beach. Not only the site offers a comfy nuance, but it has fabulous views too. In terms of name, actually, “Karang” means coral reef while “Payung” means an umbrella. The Indonesian locals gave the name due to the presence of a big vertical limestone cliff that looks like an umbrella. In terms of height, it is around 30 meters and it offers a shady area for tourists to relax. As for the shoreline, it comes with a white sandy landscape and a long size. In the westernmost of the beach, tourists may see a tall cliff and several big rocks as well. Not to mention the beach comes with big fierce waves!

Exploring Karangpayung Beach
Usually, people come to Karangpayung Beach either after or before visiting Waru Beach. It is because the location is close to each other. What tourists need to do is to walk to the west for about 500 meters from Waru Beach. However, the route features lush Pandanus Odorifer trees and a steep landscape. Despite the difficulty, this trip would be fun due to the beautiful sea scenery and warm breezy wind of the sea.

The tiredness goes away instantly once tourists arrive at Karangpayung Beach. Thanks to the serenity and clean environment. Visitors are able to eradicate stresses and tiredness right away. The most common reason to come to Karangpayung Beach is to enjoy the nuance and to relax while watching the stunning panoramas of the sea. Still, one thing that makes Karangpayung Beach special is the presence of a giant coral reef having the shape of an umbrella. After all, tourists won’t find other beaches that have such feature! Thus, it is recommended to take photos of the coral reef during the visit later. Do not forget to reach the westernmost of the shoreline where many rocks and a tall cliff reside.

How to Get There
The distance between Semarang City and Wonogiri Regency is 176 km. That means it takes about 3 hours and 40 minutes to reach the first destination. As for the faster trip, tourists should take Semarang – Surakarta Street, though. Later, once they arrive at Wonogiri, they can directly head to the beach which is located in Gunturharjo Village at Paranggupito Sub-District. The distance is 60.8 km, so the trip may take around 1 hour and 52 minutes. It is recommended to take Giritontro – Giriwoyo Street, for a faster trip, though.
