Gamalama and Ternate island from Tidore

Gamalama Mountain is located in Ternate, North Maluku Province, Indonesia. Gamalama is one of the volcanoes in North Maluku Province. In addition to this mountain, there’s Mount Gamkonora in West Halmahera District, Mount Ibu and Mount Dakona residing in North Halmahera District, and Mount Kiebesi in South Halmahera. Gamalama itself is located on the island of Ternate and has a height of about 1715 m ASL (above sea level).

Gamalama Mountain, which is also often referred to as the peak of Ternate, is a stratovolkano, the volcano high and conical, that composed of lava and volcanic ash that hardened.

By the local community, Gamalama believed to have many sacred values. No wonder so many myths in circulation, and strengthen the sanctity of this mountain. For instance, local people are always advised on a team that plans to climb Mount Gamalama to have an even number of members.

To go to Ternate can be reached by aircraft or ships. If you want to use the aircraft, there are several airlines that have flights between Jakarta – Manado – Ternate, and Jakarta – Makassar – Ternate. If you want to use ships, PT. Pelni have walked the route once a week Ternate. From the center of Ternate, visitors can go to the village Moya using public transport. This trip will takes about 30 minutes.

To climb Mount Gamalama,the visitors are not charged any fees. In the climbing route to the summit of Mount Gamalama, the climbers will see three headings that are often used as a resting place. In the village of Moya, there is only one small shop. Therefore, it is suggested to the climbers to complete the supplies sufficiently. In addition, if require lodging before or after climbing, the tourists can easily obtain it in the center of Ternate.
