East Java October Events

The East Java Calendar of Events 2010 is designed to support the Indonesian government promotion “Visit Indonesia 2010” expecting the target of million foreign visitors to Indonesia. The Calendar of Events 2010 contains the schedule of performances like arts, cultures and religious ceremonies held in the regions through out East Java and it is also hoped to provide tourist information for domestic and foreign visitors.

Local people usually celebrate those events based on the calendar of Java, Tengger and Hijriah (Arabic) therefore to confirm the exact date of the events, the visitors, should contact the local tourists offices. We hope the East Java’s Calendar of Events 2010 is useful for visitors and it can arouse the sense of belonging and care to keep alive the East Java culture and tradition.

October 12 – MAGETAN REGENCY ANNIVERSARY
To celebrate the anniversary of Magetan Regency, the local government performs Human Puppet, Bazaar and Kethoprak (traditional opera).

October 24 – SEMBONYO SEA OFFERING
In order to have good catch of fishing and to express thanksgiving to the Almighty God, the fishermen living around Prigi Beach and Karanggongso Village launches offering (food crops) into the sea and stages ritual procession, bamboo horse dance and leather puppet show.

October 24 – LONGKANGAN SEA OFFERING

October 29 – BAGONG DAM PURIFICATION
To express thanksgiving to the Almighty God, the farmers living around Bagong Dam area holds ritual ceremony dedicated to the dam initiator Menak Sopal, visit his tomb, launch buffalo head into the sea, stage bamboo horse dance and leather puppet show. Starts at 05.00 am – 18:00 pm

FLOAT PARADE FESTIVAL
Float parade festival aims to promote the beauty and priority of flower potential in Batu Municipality. It is a regional event participated by florists through out East Java. Location: Batu Municipality

BULL RACE IN SUMENEP REGENCY
Bull racing is a traditional culture and photogenic sport in Madura Island which is very famous for Madurese people as the owner of the winning bull will socially be honored. It is highlighted with various Madurese traditional art performances such as Sapi Sonok (bull beauty contest), Saronen music, and mass dance. The races are held in all regencies of Madura Island (Bangkalan, Sampang, Pamekasan, and Sumenep).

BULL RACE IN PROBOLINGGO REGENCY
Location: Tempuran Sub district, Probolinggo Regency

SUMEKAR TONG-TONG MUSIC FESTIVAL
Traditional musical instrument of Madura made of bamboo, which looks like percussion, is played together in groups at night. It is usually used for patrolling or to wake people to have early breakfast (sahur) in fasting month. Tong-tong music is now combined with other musical instruments like Klenengan (Javanese instrument), Tambourine, Saronen (Madurese flute) etc.
Location: Sumenep Regency.

October 31 – SUMENEP REGENCY ANNIVERSARY
Cultural performances and traditional music involving artists and students together stage the celebration of Sumenep Regency anniversary.
Location: Sumenep Regency.
