East Java On November

The East Java’s Calendar of Events 2011 contains the schedule of some traditional ceremonies, traditions, festivals and performances which held in the cities and the regencies in East Java. It is designed to promote and to publicize the tourism agenda in the whole area in East Java.

It is important to inform that the local communities usually determine the schedules of the ceremonial events by using the calendars of Javanese, Moslem, and Hindu Tenggerese. Therefore, to assure the exact date of the events, it is advisable to confirm the local Government Tourist Offices.

We hope the East Java’s Calendar of Events 2011 will be helpful and useful for visitors and travelers.

18 November – TULUNGAGUNG REGENCY ANNIVERSARY

The anniversary of Tulungagung Regency is celebrated every year with various attractions and activities such as ” Kirab Bersih Nagari”, the procession which is participated by all government officials in Tulungagung Regency, art clubs, social organization. ”Kirab Buceng lanang and Buceng Wadon” depics the the glory, fertility, prosperity and free from danger in Tulungagung Regency.

27 NOVEMBER – SEA OFFERING
This ritual offering can not be separated from the activities of local people that living in southern coast of Blitar Regency. It is held in every year to welcome the New Year of Javanese calendar. The offerings launched into the sea contains food crop, steamed rice cone, heads of bufallow, cow and goatnight.

November – SURABAYA FOOD FESTIVAL
Surabaya special food festival is held to preserve and raise the image of Surabaya specialties. It includes:
– Semanggi Suroboyo
– Lontong Balap
– Sate Klopo
– Tahu Campur
– Rawon
– cakes, etc.

November – KELUD FESTIVAL
Various kinds of traditional performances, exhibition of main products and wall climbing are staged at the area of Mount Kelud.

November – SEA OFFERING AT BALEKAMBANG BEACH
Labuhan Suran is a traditional sea offering ceremony to welcome the new year of Javanese calendar which is held by the society of Srigonco Village, Bantur Sub district, Malang Regency. The ceremony expresses thanksgiving to God by launching offering into the sea.

November – JAMASAN CEREMONY
Cleansing Ceremony or Jamasan is a ritual purification of heirlooms celebrated by Nganjuk community. The procession of washing heirlooms begins by the community leaders and then followed by public who wants to do the same.

November – BATHING AT SEDUDO

bathing ritual at Sedudo is being expected to have blessing from God and it is believed that those who take a bath will keep young. The procession begins with a cultural dance performed by six dancers who are still virgin and have long hair, and followed with procession of splashing water.

November – EAST JAVA DANCE COMPETITION
It aims to select the best-talented dancer in East Java who can perform at least two of five kinds of local dancings played by five ethnics living in East Java. The ethnical dancings include:
– Arek ethnical culture (Remo, Beskalan and Malang Mask dances)
– Osing ethnical culture (Gandrung, Banyuwangi Jejer dances)
– Madurese ethnical culture (Whype, Topeng Getak and Gambus dances)
– Javanese Madurese descent ethnical culture (Kiprah Glipang dances, etc)
-Mataraman ethnical culture (Gambyong, Surakarta Classical Style or the traditional dance developing in Ponorogo, Madiun, Blitar and Pacitan)
