Sabang
Sabang is a town in an island in north of Banda Aceh on the northern tip of Sumatra. The island itself is Weh Island (Pulau Weh) and Sabang is the main town on the north coast, but the names are often used differently. Amongst locals, the place are well-known as “Sabang” but amongst the tourist is known as “Pulau Weh”.
Sabang is Indonesia free economic zone, it is often referred to the northernmost point of Indonesia, precisely in Pulau Rondo. In terms of geographical of Indonesia, Sabang is located in the northernmost administrative region, and directly borders with neighboring countries of Malaysia, Thailand, and India.
While, Pulau Weh is a small island off the northern tip of Sumatra. The northern most point of the Indonesian archipelago is known as kilometer zero, or KM 0. Weh island is a volcanic island or an atol island or coral island, which experienced the process of appointment from the sea surface. The process of occurrence in three stages, as evidenced from the presence of three terraces located at different altitudes.
Sabang city before World War II is the most important port city compared to Temasek, which is now Singapore. Sabang has been widely known as a natural harbor called Kolen Station by the Dutch colonial government since 1881.
Free port in Sabang era began in 1895, known as vrij haven and managed Maatschaappij Zeehaven en Kolen Station, here in after known as Sabang Maatschaappij. World War II was also affected the condition of Sabang where in 1942 was occupied by Japanese troops, and then bombed by Allied aircraft and suffered physical damage until later forced to close.
In the early days of Indonesian independence, Sabang became the center of defense Navy of the Republic of Indonesia (RIS) with the full authority of the government through the Ministry of defense.
Sabang was also experienced the earthquake and tsunami on December 26, 2004, but due to the trenches in the Bay of Sabang are very deep, it can safe from the tsunami. Hence, Sabang used as a transit point of the sea and the air that brings aid to tsunami victims in Aceh mainland.
For those who want to go to Sabang, there will be 3 ways; Sabang has a small airflght, then people can go to Sabang by plane. There is also fast ferry and slow ferry that ready to drive the tourist to Sabang from Banda Aceh.
The only reason to go to Pulau Weh is for the beaches, the with sandy, sunny beaches. Relaxing, swimming, snorkeling and diving. Do not worry about doing anything else. The tourist can rent a motorbike from Iboih beach for about Rp.70,000 /day or rent a minivan and guide to take a group. Other recreational spots, like diving communities are also provided in this island, complete with the accommodation and everything that the tourists need.
